I've been thinking about a quick fix into Home Theater. The systems I've been looking at will cost me near $1500 and as I figure it (the way my family spends money like a drunken sailor) it will take me until Christmas or next year sometime before I have that much money saved solely for the purpose of an HT.
Therefore, in the meantime, to get a foot in the door of home theater and give my family a small taste of what they have to look forward to, I was thinking of picking up this system from AV123,
the Onix Rocket Tyke 5.1. AV123 even has a deal that for $499, not only do you get the Tyke 5.1, but you get a 100 watt per channel Kenwood receiver. (We've got a small room, 12'x14'.)
My reasoning is this has, unlike a comparably priced HTiB, expandability and the versatility to upgrade piece by piece. As I understand it a true HTiB has proprietary speakers and a receiver with very limited inputs. With this system, I believe, I can replace the speakers as I can afford better ones (either higher end AV123 gear if I like their sound or something else I've come across) until in the end I have two Home Theater systems, one for me and one for the kids to play Xbox on.
I'm just curious about the sound of these. It amazes me that the specs say the satellites have a freq. range of 80hz to 20khz considering they only have 2.5" woofer and a 3/4" tweeter. I've seen larger speakers with nowhere near that kind of response. (The Mirage Nanosat for instance, has a 2.75" woofer and only goes down to 110hz.)
I haven't found any professional reviews on these, only a few consumer ones. Is this setup worth the money or would I be better served pretending to be content with tinny TV speaker sound
and not having anything for a year until I can afford to hang with the big boys?
Thanks.
