Is there such a thing as too much sub?

I will be ordering Paradigm Milenia 20 LCR's within the next few days. I have pretty extreme limitations for my LCR (L&R cannot be more than 5-6" wide to fit in my cabinet). These seem to be the best Quality/Price I can find.

Anyways, I'm looking for a good sub ($1000 ish) to pair these with. I'm leaning towards the new SVS PB12-plus. My concern is it might be too much sub for these speakers. I'm new to this and any advice or suggestions will be greatly appreciated. Also I would consider other LCR's if anybody has suggestions on ones that will fit. Oh yeah room is 18ftX12ftX9ft with a large opening about 8ft wide floor to ceiling.

Don't think you have to worry about having too much of a sub:D
Upon setup, you will adjust the levels so they are equally loud or a tad louder on the sub. Your other speakers should go down and below to the sub crossover point.

I agree that it's impossible to have too much sub if it's calibrated correctly. The only thing you could do is buy a sub so large that you have extra headroom you'll never use, but with the size of your room and the opening in it, the PB12-Plus is actually a perfect fit. You'll be very well set for most all listening levels.

I have a PC-Plus that's lasted for 5 years and it's still the best investment I've made in my system.

Welcome to the forum!

I agree - you can't have too much sub. You can have it turned up louder than you enjoy...but then you just turn it down. :) There's always the consideration of paying more than you need to in order to get the performance that you want, but you shouldn't worry about the sub overpowering your speakers. Like mtrycrafts said, you'll just adjust the volume on the sub to match your speakers.

No, there is no such thing.

Frankly I would like to know that my sub is not straining, it would be nice to know I am not driving my subwoofer to its limits. I can always turn the volume/gain down. :)

I installed one of the firsted shipped new SVS PB12-Plus subs in November. It is a great sub and you can adjust to whatever level you want. It can be subtle to brilliantly powerful. If you get it ,you will be very glad you did!

Good Luck!

The sub is fine, but have you considered other options to cramming your LCRs into a cabinet? Try cupping your hands around your mouth and then speaking or singing. Doesn't it change the sound of your voice? This is comparable to what you do to a speaker when you place it in a confined space.

It is the only option. The cabinet is completely open in front though. It has a giant sliding glass door that opens over a shelving unit next to it when in use. When open it will in no way obstruct the speakers.

Tis better to have too much power and not need it, then to have too little power and need it. I have a SVS NSD 12/2 and two Deftech BP7001sc with built in subs with 1,500 watt amps in each tower and I couldnt even get close to using 1/5 the power of all that bass. Anymore and I fee my bay windows would crack under the pressure.

Depends on the degree of confinement.

Yes, I will agree with your example; bnut I am not sure that equates to reality. Now instead of cupping your hands around you mouth right next to your mouth, move them 4-6" from each side of your mouth. That is more like the efect he will get placing them in an amoire. You see, it all depends on how confined the space a LCR ( or as referred to by Def Tech CLR) is place in. it also makes a big difference if the front is flush with the confined space or recessed and if recessed, how deep.

The particular confinement I have (shown below) does no have any audible impact, at least none my ears can discern.

The CLR3000 is "confined" as it were above the TV

Good luck,
