Is there a need for Speaker boxes?

I am installing in-wall speakers, and I am wondering if there is a need to construct a speaker box for them?

will this help the sound quality?

If so, is there a way at determining the size(volume) required for the box?

I have been reading many discussions on the use of dynamat and the pros and cons. For the most part people recommend it but the fact that its pricy is the downfall... are there cheaper alternatives to Dynamat? should i forget it all together?

Thanks for your help!!

Most all in wall/ceiling manufactures have boxes for their products. Which are you looking at?

I have the NS-IW660 and the IW960.

in the installation manual they just suggest insulating the cavity with fibreglass insulation before you install the speaker.

If it makes a difference I would like to put a box there.

Thanks,

The inside of the wall itself will act like an enclosure for the speaker it self. Im sure you can build an encolosure for the speaker, but I dont think its worth your time.
