Is there a hang-on-the-wall surround system out there?

I have a somewhat of a narrow, smaller room that I want to put a simple 5.1 surround system in. I will be getting a flat screen in the neighborhood of 26-32" that I will hang on the wall. Is there a receiver out there that I can simply hang on the wall under the TV for a sleek, clean look so that I don't have to put a cabinet or stand there? I know Sony makes an in-wall unit made available primarily to new home builders that you can't get anywhere. I'm looking for something a bit more off the shelf. Some sort of all-in-one unit including receiver w/ dvd, speakers and sub would be awesome.

Or just tell me i'm crazy.....

Thanks,

JB

The only thing I recall seeing like that was by Bang & Olufsen. Outrageously expensive, naturally.

I think you should take a step back and look in a different direction. You can easily put the system in a closet or a cabinet beside you or behind you and run a simple IR set-up to control everything.

I am not entirely sure, but I think Yamaha, Samsung and Phillips sell those surround bars with built-in dvd player and receiver.

You could try this - it's inexpensive and might be what you're looking for. I guess I'm trying to visualize what you're after. All-in-one Home Theater system?

This mount supports up to 40 pounds, but would fit nicely underneath your TV. Get some Wiremold or Panduit to handle the speaker wires and interconnects if going into the wall is not an option.

I like both ideas about a simple infrared system as well as some wall mounts. The only issue with the wall mounts is that ideally I would like the entire setup to stick off the wall about the same distance as the TV - so like 6-8" or so. That's where wall mounts may not work for me.

Can anyone expand more for me on the infrared system?

Thanks!

The infrared system is merely a network of IR repeaters with a receptor located in proximity to where you would normally aim the remote (at the TV for example). The signal from your remote is then fed to the IR repeaters which are located at the equipment location, usually near the IR "eye" of the component. This allows you to store the equipment in a location away from the front field of view (such as in a closet, next to the couch, another room, etc).

I've worked with more complicated control systems such as AMX and Crestron before, but someone here will surely have a link to a consumer level brand that might suit your needs. I've always just used a good universal remote at home. :D
