Is the PB13-Ultra overkill for my application? See room model @ http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=1114535&highlight=ryounglaw. Its 99% HT. The other option is the PB12+. Its $600 less, but will it do the job. My old sub is PSW10, not really a sub I know. Anything will be an improvement. I am not going to build my own; I know I can get better value if I do. No time because of job and life and getting married in June. I want to buy it and plug it in. I will take other suggestions but it has to have a nice finish, future WAF. The room is approx 4200 cu ft. What do you think? Oh I live in a townhouse, middle unit. There is no sense to buy something is if can't use it, right?

As an Ultra owner I say go for it, I think it will be said there is no such thing as overkill. As for finish, these things are a work of art. Just my biased opinion, and I sure there will be plenty of more objective answers coming. ;)

Your best bet would be to contact SVS and they will tell you everything that you want know. They will not try to sell you anything that you do not need, you can trust them and their customer service is the best you can get.

I have a PB12-Plus in my den which has about the same volume as you room and it sounds awesome. But never let it be said that you can have too much of a good sub; it is akin to saying you don't need more horsepower in a car :D

Good luck! I am sure you will make sound decision ;)

As any good audioholic will tell you on here....you can *never* have too much, nor is there such a thing as overkill. Having more performance headroom is always a good thing and will provide you with the best sound quality. That being said, you will not be dissapointed with the Ultra and the sub is just darn pretty in the rosewood and piano black finishes. This will be such a phenominal upagrade from your current sub you will be totally floored....

No, it is not overkill, if you can afford it then get it. That way you will never have to wonder what if.

I say get the best sub you can afford. I would love a 13 ultra, but even the 12plus was stretching it for me. (a 12plus is almost $1700 shipped in Canada, I didn't even bother asking how much an ultra would cost me). If its in your budget get the 13 and don't look back.

As far as overkill is concerned, thats relative to what you want your sub to do. For HT, I think more is always better. In your smaller setup, much like mine, it is comforting to know your not pushing your equipment to its limits. I'm thinking a better sub like the ultra will last much longer using, say 40% of its potential, than running a 12plus at 75%.

As far as the 12 plus doing the job. From what I've heard, it wont just do the job, it will seriously impress you. Especially coming from your old sub.

Comparing the two is like comparing a BMW M3 to an M5, and then asking if the M3 will "do the job". Hell yeah it will. But very few people with an M5 budget choose the M3...

this may be a dumb question but can I change the output/volume(newb term) for different situations, late night etc. so i do not get shot by my neighbors

My PB12/Plus is overkill for my room which makes it just right. But I would still get an Ultra if I could.

too much? nah

I have a 2 br end unit condo here in NY. My system was a sbs-01 7.1 set, with pb10-isd. Just sold my pb10, looking to upgrade it to scs-01 fronts, and a pb12-nsd but now considering possibly a PC-Ultra instead he he..

You can adjust your sub to play as loud or as quiet as you want. Not sure about the 13ultra, but some subs have a "night" mode, which cuts the bass output. Even if it doesn't just turn the nob on the back of the sub down to where you want it.

Yes you can change volume

Yes easily :) The sub has a volume control and you also set a realitive sub volume level on the AVR. Once all this is set (an you can change it fairly easily) the overally volume of all the speakers including the sub is controlled by the main AVR volume control.
