I am interested after lot of research to have a floor stander KEF iQ5 and pair them with the ONKYO TX SR 604E, but I see that the ohms mentioned in the Onkyo AV receiver is 6 whereas the ohms mentioned in the Speakers specs. are 8 ohms, is it safe ? does any of the experienced user's think it is a good / safe bet .

Thanks for your assitance.

No problem. The 6 ohms is the minimum the Onkyo should be used with. The 8 ohms is easier for the receiver to handle.

The impedance is the load the speakers put on the amp. In other words, the amp is rated for the lowest ohms it can handle, whereas the speakers are the actual ohms the amplifier has to deal with.

Lower impedence speakers are tougher on amplifiers because they draw more amps per watt.

The amp can handle a 6 ohm load, which means that an 8 ohm load is no problem, but 4 ohm speakers might be tough and cause the amp to overheat and shut down.

Just as a side note; I really like the sound of the IQ series KEF... Good choice.

Another side note:

I am not trying to make things more confusing, but the Kef's for example are rated for 8 ohms nominal. However, that does not mean they will always be 8 ohms when being used. They may dip lower or shoot higher than that at times, which could put stress on the amplifier at higher volumes. That is one of the reasons I believe that better amplifiers will sound better with most speakers.;)
