Is the AVR 135 enough?

I am in the midst of my floorstander research/auditioning. I won't have much cash left over for a new receiver but I don't think that my JVC will do any justice to the new loudspeakers.

I managed to get a line on a Harmon Kardon AVR 135 for a song. I'm wondering if you think that it will have enough juice to drive the Axiom M60's properly?

I'm also looking at Monitor Audio Bronze B6's which are rated as 6 ohm. Any thoughts on whether this will be too much of a chore for the AVR 135?
The 135 is rated at 40 wattsX6 by HK.

I look forward to your feedback. Upgrading any further isn't much of an option in my current budget.

I look forward to your advice,

Jordan

it would work, but personally i think id wait until i could afford a better receiver

im running an axiom set up and it has plenty of power with the 335, but if i went with bigger fronts id probobly want a 435 or 635.. i kind of wish i would have waited and bought the 635 instead.

just get a refurbished on from the harmon dealer on ebay.. good deals with a full man., warranty.

Sorry to deceive you... but there's no way the AVR-135 will handle sound at high levels. It'll bring a nice and warm sound quality though. If you're going for this one, just make sure you have some pre-outs on the back for further amplification. I own Polks floorstanding loudspeakers and I'm auditioning an AVR-635 myself.

My friend's father owns a 135 with large loudspeakers and mannnn... lack of power here......... but nice sound lol.

Tough call. The Axioms look pretty sensitive according to their specs. I guess it really depends on how large of a room you have, and how loud you want to listen? I have an HK AVR125 driving some Klipsch towers in a 2 channel setup in a 12'x10'x8' room, and it drives them to ear splitting levels. The Klipsch are 95db though.

Just to be on the safe side, I might look at a more powerful receiver if you're looking to run 5 channels off your AVR. Then again, if you're getting such a good deal on the 135, you might want to try it out. You can always sell it and make your money back.

The room is about 16x12x9. I'm in an apartment so I can't play anything too loud or else the neighbour below will freak. I'm really leaning towards the M60's now which are fairly efficient speakers. I thougth that with these two factors together that I might be able to get by with the AVR 135.

Sadly, the 135 does not have pre-outs so I'm stuck with the 6x40 output.

Sounds like its a tough call whether it can do it or not. Any others have experience with this?

By the way, what Axioms were you driving with the 335?

Many thanks for your help,

J

It if doesn't have pre-outs, then I wouldn't buy it unless you want to look at the expense as a "throw away" just to get you buy a little while. I don't think you'd be happy in the long-run. That's just my opinion... it's your money, your music, your life.

Cheers
