Is Rotel an Upgrade to Yamaha

I have a RX-V2600 currently and love it. The video and audio are awesome on my B&W 705's and B&W HTM7 center. I have an opportunity to pic up a new RSX-1058 Rotel at a killer price. Can I improve my SQ and not hurt my VQ with the Rotel? 75% HD movie watching and listening and 25% two channel listening. I dont want to give up sound or video quality, and I need to maintain component video upconvert to HDMI.

Your thoughts?

Thanks

I don't think you should even bother.

I don't think the Rotel will improve anything over the Yamaha.

I think you should save the money for future upgrades, because we all know that is inevitable.:D

The Yamaha is getting pretty dated, but there are a number of newer products out and avail that will show the Rotel is starting to get dated as well...

What does "a killer price" mean... How much..?

Do you have a 5.1 setup...? or only 3 speakers...

I vote for new speakers instead, if it is SQ you are worried about.

I vote for new display instead, if it is VQ you are worried about.

What's wrong with sending component video directly to the display? Your display will take all rezs and forcibly scale them to native rez. Some TVs are good enough where they might do better than any audio processor that you might be looking at.

With a lot of missing information, my instinct is to say: save your money towards new speakers or new display. Those are the two things that by far make the biggest difference, and that's probably because of the thing they share in common. They are both the final stop for an electrical signal, where it is then transformed into something that the human senses can detect, whether that is mechanical sound energy or visible light energy.

Get a killer sub instead unless you already have one. ;):D

I'm with meat here. Greater differences will be had with speakers and or a display.... That being said, If you love the Rotel and think it's cool and have the cash there is nothing wrong with splurging is there.:)

Shame-shame.
??

I beleive I could do better for $1500 than a pair of two way book shelf speakers with 6.5" woofer. Even if it is B&W. Stuff sounds terrific until you've compared it to something else.

Especially considering it sounds like an HT setup. I would have to know more about the OP's usage scenario before throwing either way.

I don't believe the 705's were worth their price, but I doubt they are lacking.

As for my reply, I believe the post I replied to was a pretty hard blow towards the OP's chosen speaker.

I wasn't trying to knock the speakers, I was trying to help him understand how best to use his money.

How much do you think the Rotel is?

Whatever it might cost, say I saved some more, like 100% of its cost, then add the money from the sale of either display or speakers . . . and then you might have a much more meaningful upgrade than swapping a Yammy (known for clear and transparent preamp sections) for Rotel (previously great rep, but now long in the tooth). Even TLS Guy says he thinks his Marantz is better than his old Rotel in certain regards.

For example, let's pretend Rotel is $1000. I save another $1000. I sell the 705s for $1000-1200 (no idea if that's fair, but Audiogon lists pairs at those prices right now).

All of a sudden with 3K, I could for instance get a 58" VT25 with hundreds in the pocket. This will likely a make much bigger improvement with VQ than a Rotel processor.

Or instead I could land a pair of 804S towers (I could name many other brands, but I'll stick with B&W to appease you). Again, this will likely make a much bigger improvement with SQ than with a Rotel processor.

I auditioned the 7xx series quite a bit, on Rotel gear, switching stuff out including some Quad speakers. The dealer trusted me and went out for lunch. I also listened quite a bit to the 8xx series, and I do prefer the 804s by a large margin over the 7xx. Just for example. Again, I'm only talking about BW here, too.

Yes, my suggestions above do cost money, but it's possibly better spent. Even if we reduced the total down to 2.5k, or even 2k, there are lots of ideas.

How about a JVC HD250 for instance.

I didn't know that man, and am sorry to have wasted that little portion of my life for something so unclear.

Which is why I have yet to read more than the first line of your long winded reply. It was making my head hurt.
