Is My HDMI Input Broken?

I have a Sanyo CRT HDTV that has started acting weird in the past couple days. On Sunday, I tried to watch a couple movies through a Denon 1940 and I couldn't get any video to show up. It would flash a couple times and then go black. Everything worked fine on Saturday night. I tried my laptop and Toshiba A30 and they worked. I had just got the Denon, so I thought that its HDMI output had broken. I got a service authorization yesterday and last night took my system apart since I have to send my Marantz receiver in for service on an unrelated issue.

I hooked up my Onkyo 506 and Toshiba player and put in the Love DVD-A to test it. It worked well. I then put in the Eagles DTS DVD and I suddenly couldn't get any video! The audio is transmitted by an optical cable, and that came through fine. The screen would flash green/black/green/black a couple times and then get stuck on black. I connected the player directly to the TV and had the same results. I hooked my laptop's HDMI output to the TV and my laptop wouldn't recognize the TV as a second display. I checked the connections and when I plugged the HDMI cable back into the laptop, my laptop shut off immediately (that's happened twice now). I also tried changing the output resolution on the players and nothing worked. I reset everything I could with no change in behavior either.

I tried connecting everything with component video cables and I get video from both the Denon and Toshiba players from DVDs and HD-DVDs. Is the HDMI input on my TV broken? That's the only thing that I can think of that explains its behavior. I don't think all my sources would develop an HDCP issue within a couple days of each other unless the display was causing it. What do you guys think?

The fact the laptop shut down suggests that the hand shake output from the TV HDMI has something amiss. Remember HDMI is two way because of the HDCP codes. These kinds of problems have been known to damage connected equipment. It sounds as if the TV needs service or replacement.

You might be lucky and the connector just need replacing. HDMI sockets are appallingly poor mechanically and easily damaged. You want to avoid taking plugs in and out as much as possible. Physical damage to the socket is a common problem. The design of the whole set up is moronic, and something only modern engineers could come up with.

Thanks for the help. I thought something like that was going on. I actually found a good deal on a Panasonic X1 at a local store with interest-free financing so I jumped at that. The Panny works wonderfully with my Toshiba (haven't tried the Denon yet) and looks better than my Sanyo could ever dream of. I'm going to relegate the Sanyo to my bedroom and use component inputs. It's not worth enough to get serviced.

Good to know about the potential for damage over HDMI. I'll definitely be careful if I run into a similar issue again.
