Is it worthwhile to buy an upgraded Oppo BDP-83?

Further from all these talks about the Oppo universal player, is it worthwhile to beef them up with various high-end components?

ie.

Jitter correction clock,
Cap mods
Burson HD opamp change
Bybee
Power supply, fuse

etc
etc

This workshop is offering a range of mods for the Oppo... Is it worth it? Has anyone tried it?

I'm sorry, but 99% of the time, such 'mods' only make a difference to one's perception; that is... it's psychological; no changes that result in true detectable difference within human threshold of detection. There is of course, that last 1% that may actually improve something to the point where it can be detected.... but that is a very rare circumstance, indeed....

Firstly sorry about the dead link. Here it is again.

I don't think that 99% of these mods are snake oil... There are many moding companies out there offering mods for the Oppo and other hi fi equipment... As Bendphan has pointed out, ModWright is also one of them.

One look at this DIY blog and you know the DIY community is large and active... they can't all be spending money on things that they can't detect... :p

As Bendphan has pointed out ...
... we're just getting closer and closer to calling him bedpan everyday. :)

When it comes to these mods for electronics I have to say that I am personally wary and put off in general. We have a couple of guys on here with electrical engineering degrees. I don't see them promoting these sorts of mods. The owner of Audioholics (Gene) has an EE degree I believe. I don't see him promoting these mods.

On the other hand I read a review in Stereophile where the reviewer said that a certain type of upgraded fuse (consider it a very basic mod) made an improvement in sound. I don't appreciate it when somebody needs to make a monkey out of me to take my money. FWIW, Oppo is modding Oppo but at least they're telling it like it is. :)

Well, one magazine reviewed the original Oppo and said that it lacked audiophile quality DAC's. Oppo itself offers a "special edition". So, obviously there's something to it. Ayre Electronics claims that they're modded Oppo does the same. So, obviously there's something to the mods if the company itself offers upgraded DAC's. Whether or not this makes a difference is up to the purchaser.

If you use HDMI for audio, then the above is likely a waste.

Do you have a link to Ayre Electronics?

I have this one, and can not find anything about their Oppo mods.

People spend large sums on things that don't work, all the time. Being pre-sold on something makes it much more likely that what has been described will be observed. Measurable differences may exist but human hearing isn't so good that minute differences can be perceived. The difference between .1% and .01% of some spec is ten times but not audible. The difference between 1% and 10% is audible but the ratio is coincidental.
