Hi all,

I may have the opportunity to purchase a two-month-old Denon 2910 from someone for only $500 CDN. Considering my local store sells them for $1000 CDN, I figure it's a darn good price. But I'm wondering about a couple of things:

1. Is the 2910 overkill considering my present system? A 27" SD CRT, component video cables, and a Yamaha RX-V750 receiver. The Denon player costs more than my receiver! My present universal player, the Pioneer DV-588A, is pretty good video-wise, and does an okay job on the hi-res audio. Will I see and hear much of a difference, considering my present equipment?

2. I don't know anymore which is better -- pure DSD, or DSD to PCM. Regardless of that, will the 2910 play hi-res audio better than my 588A? (Again, consider my present system, also I'm using two sets of component cables as my analog connectors for the hi-res audio.) Will there be a noticeable increase in sound quality? I've only got 2 stereo SACDs, 2 multichannel SACDs, and three DVD-As, so maybe it's not the hugest concern.

Thanks for any input, guys!

cheers,
supervij

In theory, the 2910 should sound better over the analog connections for SACD/DVD-A as the DACS in the player are probably substantially superior to your receiver. As I see it, the 2910's biggest advantage is in it's digital video output ability....which will be of no advantage in your present setup.

If I had your setup and software selection, I'd pass and save the money for other upgrades in the future.

Hmmm . . . I guess you're right, Mort. Thanks for the advice. Now that I've got digital cable (going into my analog TV), I have been seriously considering buying an HDTV (preferably a DLP RPTV) within a year or so. Would it then be worth it, assuming I do pick one up?

It would be worth it if you are planning on getting that HDTV in my opinion.
