Is it okay to not use the rear center speaker?

I'm considering buying the following:

Ventriloquist VT-12 from HSU Research, and get a VTF-2 MK2 sub to go with it, all for $700 and it will be hooked up to either a Denon AVR1906 or 2106.

From everything I've read, it sounds like this would be a decent beginner's HT system. My question is this. It is a 6.1 system, and my couch is against the wall. Does it matter if I don't use that speaker? Do the other speakers know I didn't hook it up, or does it only matter what I tell the receiver is hooked up?

I know you are probably asking yourself, "why doesn't he just buy a 5.1 system?". One is price, and two and looks/size. WAF is a huge factor and speakers like the SBS-01 have that slightly larger than normal center speaker, and huge sub, and the Onix X-LS speakers center speaker is the same size as the bookshelf speakers. So if someone knows of a decent 5.1 speaker system, that is around the same price (up to $900), and has a good WAF (small), please post (that is a secondary question to the main one of not using the rear center speaker).

No, not a problem at all. 5.1 will give you most everything, especially in your circumstance.

If you don't have/want surround rear speakers hooked up to the receiver then the auto setup will adjust your settings appropriately, if you do it manually make sure you set the receiver's speaker setup for no rear surrounds. Any signal for the rear surrounds on a 6.1 track will then be played through the side surrounds as a phantom rear.

cheers:)

Hi Mattr,

as an aditional info, with a 6.1 and/or 7.1 system, you'll be able to fully enjoy the Dolby PL II X (which is excellent, IMO), while with a 5.1 you'll only enjoy Dolby PL II. Maybe this is not an issue for you, as with a 5.1 system, you'll be fine though. Just my .2 cents.

Cheers / Avliner.
