Is it bad to have a big sub too close to the AV receiver?

Ive got my sub just about half a foot from my AV receiver. Im worried about possible magnetic interference or vibrations harming or degrading audio/video qualtiy and or receiver its self. thoughts?

If you don't hear anything, then no. I have my 15" about 2ft away and no ill effects.

I was thinking that the sub, which is not magneticly sheilded might harm or distort the reciver. Is there nothing inside of a reciver that can be affected by magnetic interference?

My sub is 5'' from my AVR at most. No issues...

Cannot think of anything in there that might be affected, unlike a CRT Tv's electron beam. :D

Is it true that CRT's are the only thing that would suffer from non-shielded speakers? LCD, Plasma, DLP, LCoS, and all the other flavors are immune?

One might assume that an alternating magnetic field might induce a current in nearby wires located inside said electronics...depending on how strong said magnetic field is.

Bottom line is, don't worry about the subwoofer being to close to the receiver. Now if you are getting some type of interference, it is probably a ground loop.

 that is an interesting thought!!! Speaker magnets are fairly strong. But seems like no one else is having problems. so i guess its ok:eek:

Speaker magnetic field is not alternating, as best I know.
The current in the signal wires are and they are in other components just as well, and in the power cable at worst.

Well, not sure if a very powerful magnet may not affect something, but that would need a huge magnet that is just not present in normal conditions. :D

theres a electro magnet isnt there??

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but your receiver emits an electromagnetic field. Also, LCD and Plasma are not effected by magnets. I don't know about something like a rare earth magnet though.

As for the OP, your subwoofer should have an amplifier inside of it unless you have a super cheap subwoofer from Wal-Mart, and it does not effect it. The only ill effect I can think of would be from rattling but I doubt there would be much difference in placing it 20' or 1' in that case. However, the magnetic field will have no effect.

good to know, what about speaker wire near the sub, is that ok too?

The voice coil creates the electromagnetic field that reacts to the permanent magnet but that permanent magnet is more powerful I believe.

How about that field from your transformer in a component then?

The only thing I can think of happening (and I don't think it's even possible with such a "weak" magnet) is that the magnetic field from the subwoofer could polarize nearby objects. But I don't think it could happen unless it was right on the magnet.
