Is HDMI worth it on receivers?

I just bought a new 60"mitsu DLP that has HDMI connections. Since my current denon doesn't have HDMI, wouldn't it be just as easy to connect my HD cablebox to the tv via hdmi, then for the sound using optical directly to the receiver? I do the same thing w/ the DVD: going from the dvd player to the tv directly for video and dvd to receiver directly for sound. I have a Harmony remote that has macros so it's quite painless to turn things on and off via one remote. Is this the wrong thing to do?

I don't think your connections are wrong (but I personally prefer to route everything through the receiver for easy switching despite the fact that I could set up macros).

HDMI holds great promise that IMO has not yet been achieved. Although it is capable of carrying both high resolution video and audio at the same time, it often doesn't because the device manufacturers often don't implement the audio portion. It will be a requirement for HD DVD but by the time that becomes mainstream the industry will be moving forward to NGMI (Next Generation Multimedia Interface). Ok, I made up that acronym but bet the bank on it - before HDMI becomes mainstream and is available on low cost devices sold at WalMart, the industry will be touting the next big thing.

IMO, the only thing HDMI buys you is the ability to use one cable for video instead of 3.

Thank you very much for that insight. I was dreading on spending more money when my current denon is only 4 years old.

Nothing is wrong with your setup in my opinion because it is exactly what I do. And with one touch, the Harmony does just anything I want except make the pop corn. This also works well if you rarely fire up the whole system just to watch TV.

He should definitely copyright that. A format that always sounds like it just came out, now that is something.:D
