Is an amp required for a preamp?

I have two nice speakers and a sweet turntable. I've read favorable reviews of the Marantz PM5003 preamp. Is that all I'd need as a go between? Or do I have to run the preamp through an amp? Also, assuming that is all I'd need, if you have any other recs for a PHONO preamp in the 500 dollar price range it would be most appreciated.

Yes, you'll need a seperate amplifier with a Preamp.

The PM5003 is not a preamp, though. It's an integrated amplifier. And it's about to be replaced by the PM5004. But if you can get it for a decent price and your nice speakers don't need tons of power -- doesn't seem like a bad choice.

This, plus the Marantz PM5003 has a built in phono preamplifier built in. This integrated amplifier should work great with most speakers assuming you don't need to crank the volume to insane levels. The PM5003 is conservatively rated 40 watts per channel. I personally have used a 25 watt per channel component to drive many different speakers to respectable listening levels.
