Is a receiver upgrade needed?

Hello all, I'm a newbie here so hopefully I'm posting this in the right section. I'm looking for some advice on whether or not my receiver should be upgraded. I currently have a Denon Avr-3805. The receiver doesn't have any HDMI connections and it doesn't have Dolby TrueHD or DTS-HD Master Audio codecs. It does have 5.1 analog inputs which I'm utilizing for my Blu-Ray player, so I don't believe I'm losing audio quality there but I could be wrong. So my question is would it be worthwhile to upgrade to a receiver with HDMI and the latest codecs? Thanks for all your help.

If you're running a 5.1 setup you're not losing anything as long as your bluray player can handle the lossless codec decoding. Do you have issues with lip sync or some other issue? Or just want to use the receiver for switching hdmi sources? Hard to know what makes changing avr an upgrade for you.....

Thanks for the reply. My current blu-ray player is the Oppo bdp-103 and I believe it has the lossless codecs.

Yep. As long as you're happy why buy a new avr? Spend it on movies/music....

Analog 5.1 out from BD player. Even before you've said it, I knew it must be an Oppo model. It was fairly rare on DVD players, but nearly non-existing on BD players. Eventually, you'd have to upgrade, but for now you're good with your electronics.

Now, how are your speakers/sub?

Thanks again for the replies! My speakers are B&W 604S3 with the matching center. The surrounds are JBL S310. The jbls were my fronts years ago before I had the b&w's. The sub is a SVS pc13 ultra. I just upgraded to this sub back in March. I'm fine with the sound thus far... but can always use upgrades or try different brands!

If you go 4K TV or want Atmos and DTSX ceiling speakers, you would need to upgrade. Otherwise, run it until it dies. :)

You did mention new codecs. I’m wondering if you mean Dolby Atmos/dtsX. If yes, definitely need a new avr and some speakers for the ceiling. As far as that goes, yeah you’re missing out.

Edit: snakeeyes beat me...
