Is a 75ft speaker cable too long?

I am deciding where to position my HT equipment and the ideal position for everything else puts the right rear surround speaker 75 feet away from the amp. I plan on buying the 10 gauge cable from Blue Jeans. Is this long run going to have any impact on the sound?

Thanks in advance!

As long as you match the length of the run with the appropriate gauge of wire, the length can be anything. For 75 feet, 10 gauge should be more than adequate. If you were to use 12 gauge, the resistance would be slighly higher with correspondingly higher losses, but most likely still would not cause any audible problems.

Here is a table from a respected engineer with rules of thumb for wire gauge vs run length:

Unless your speakers are grossly inefficient and/or your amp is grossly underpowered, then no - a 75 ft. run is not "too long". Although there could be a loss of a db or two, that should not present any sort of a problem, unless the two unusual conditions I cited in the first sentence are in play.

Hope this helps you

Home RCA wiring

I was looking for some help on home wiring.
I have recently wired RCA wall plates in my lounge to go from my stereo to my tv. But the picture has become all wavy whereas before it was crystal clear.
What is the correct way to wire up the RCA ports? I have used a standard 3 core cable.
I noticed on the RCA port that it has a central connection and an outer connection but I have only connected my wire to the central part - does the outer connection need to be grounded?
Please help - I cant stand watching my TV like this :( :( :(

Is the RCA cables crossing Electrical wires or are laid together or very near......if its a yes......you got the source of the problem.

j,

Are you trying to connect composite video plus left and right audio between the stereo and TV?

If so, you should use 6 conductors: 2 each for video, right channel, and left channel. The centre RCA sockets at each end of each signal cable must be connected together (this wire is usually referred to as "positive", or "+"). Likewise, the outer RCA rings at each end must also be connected together (this wire is the "negative", or "-" conductor). Do not try and ground this wire unless you know what is going on inside your stereo equipment.

It is also important to try and maximize the separation between these cables and the AC wiring whenever possible to minimize interference.

What is this "standard 3 core cable" you are talking about and how long is the cable run from the TV to the stereo?

Also, if you have a question unrelated to any current threads, try posting your own ... you'll get a much better responce. :)
