Is a 12'' sub too much for an apartment?

I have looked at several satellite systems(polk, klipsch, jbl, infinity) and have narrowed it down to a few choices. The Infininty TSS 1200 system is the top contender now. It comes with a 12'' sub. My question is : Is a 250 W 12'' sub too much for my apt living room which is 15x14? Or is it a non-issue and I just turn it down?
Also, anybody have experience with this system?
thanks!

Take my word for it. Your neighbors will hear that sub quite easily. However, I think you should get it. Just go easy on the volume.:p

I don't think a 12'' is too much for an apartment if you can fit it in. You are right. You can always turn it down. I to go BB, CC and Fry's often and listen to many things they sell at those places. The subs that come with speaker systems are horrendous. Fry's has the Monster 12'' sub on sale right now for $599. Regular price is $1,199. This half-moon sub is one of the best looking subs I have seen. It's gorgeous with cherry veneer on top of a piano black base. It sounds pretty good too. At this price, it's a very tempting deal as far as B&M stuff go. Only if I didn't have a sub already.

Just found a picture for it.

I live in a studio apartment (one big room) and have a bic H-100 I have to turn it down I have already had the neighbor over once when I first got it but it still does the job at low volumes and I will have it if I ever get into a house or more bass friendly apartment building:D

From personal experience...

Subwoofer + apartment living = pissed off neighbors.
Subwoofer + apartment living = regular visits from police officers on weekends.
Subwoofer + apartment living = mysterious grooves in my vehicle's paint.
Subwoofer + apartment living = surcharges to rent due to noise complaints. :(
Subwoofer + apartment living = increased stomping from my upstairs neighbor.
Subwoofer + apartment living = threats of eviction from landlord.

Subwoofer - apartment living + home rental or ownership = bliss.
:D:D:D.

As was mentioned. But, it also has a bit to do with how the apartment is constructed. Some have concrete floors between floors and walls for noise control, etc. Others, well, just Sheetrock and you hear everything. :D

Regarding the sub, turn it off after 8 or 9 PM. It's worked for me for a few years. The problem with the TSS HTIB is that the satellites cross over at 120hz if I remember right. That's kind of high. I use Infinity, look at my sig. If I were buying a 5.1 system, I would post my budget in the "Loud Speakers" forum and consider the Internet Direct options recommended by some of the members here.

I started out with an Infinity HTIB and am now on my third speaker upgrade. I'm good now but if I knew then what I know now....:)

I'd get the 12" (in fact I did :D). I used to use my old 8" sub at night placed over a towel on top of the 12". That didn't bother the neighbors at all. Then I used them together for a while.

Now I use 2 12" subs all the time level matched to my system. Late at night when bass heavy scenes come on, I just temporaryily turn down the system volume til the explosion or whatever ends, usually only a few seconds, then turn it right back up. It's become a habit to have my finger on the volume button on the remote late at night. It's less overall work than constantly adjusting the subs volume and doesn't really ruin most movies. it's a bit more trouble with something like u-571, so I tend to stay away from late night viewing of those types of movies.

Also, a few weeks of asking my neighbors if they had heard my sub the night before let me know how loud I can get away with without waking them up or being annoying.

No such thing as too much. They have volume controls.

Be prepared for the police at your door!

When I was in grad school I rocked the polk psw1000. The neighbors two apartments over called the complex because I knocked their pictures off the wall. Apartments have thin walls, one morning the neighbors asked me how I enjoyed Terminator 2 the night before (guess it was loud enough they could identify the movie). A true home theater is measured on how far away you get noise complaints. I now own ten acres, haven't been able to get a noise complaint in 2 years. I just added McIntosh monoblocks to the fronts and the center If my neighbors are listening, I'm comm'n for ya!

If I was your neighbor, you would.
DRC can help you not bug the neighbors as well.
What is DRC?

Actually,I don't really turn it up that loud very often. Only occasionally. So far no complaints.

I'm glad you're NOT my neighbor.

Dynamic Range Compression/Control aka Night Mode. I'm the same way as you right down to the part about being glad that I'm NOT my neighbor. ;)
