Is 40hz correct after set up with Audyssey?

After setting up my 2.1 system with Audyssey, the final calculations was that it set my speakers to "small" and set the crossover at 40hz.

Is 40hz correct? Isn't 80hz usually recommended for the sub? I haven't spent much time listening after set up, but the sub seems a little weak.

Audyssey setting the crossover at 40hz. is perfectly normal. It sets it at the -3db point measured in room.

As far as the the bass sounding a little weak, feel free to change the crossover and give it a listen. As long as you don't set it lower than Audyssey did you'll be fine.

80hz. is a great spot to start at, and it takes a lot of load off your amps and speakers.

It's tough to say what exactly is correct without seeing some measurements of what's going on in your room.

80hz/small is the THX recommended crossover. What it doesn't factor in is that

1) Your room isn't likely thx certified
2) You're only using one sub, not four
3) Your speakers sound like they are vented, not sealed like THX speakers

Getting balanced bass requires you to measure your setup.

I guess it really depends on your mains. If they extend deep enough to have a 40Hz x-over, then there's no reason why that wouldn't work. Then again, if they are good enough to have a 40hz x-over, you probably don't need a sub...
