Ironic Car Accident

So my wife leaves the office early to take her dad to the DMV to get his I.D. Walking back to the car, a van comes through turns into a parking spot way to fast and smashes our new car. Turns out, the kid is taking his driver's license on his 16th birthday with the DMV lady in the car... his mom waiting a few feet away.

My wife calls me... tells me this chubby little kid is bawling and feels horrible, the mother is about to clobber him, and the DMV lady is sitting literally saying "I'm getting too old for this sh*t."

I swear... it's always something. The bullsh*t never ends.

Guessing he didn't get his license.

I doubt it. I imagine his mom wouldn't have allowed it anyway after that.

This was my first lease so I'm wondering what the hit will be on the residual. Clearly it'll be on the carfax. Even if we get it fixed by the dealer or by a top shop, I'm wondering if they're going to f me on turn in. It's not structural, but I'm assuming it's still going to cost me on the back end as well. Personally, I think I should be compensated for that.

I'd ask the dealer how they will handle it. If they intend to ding you, and I'd expect they will also, I'd get an estimate and you should be reimbursed for that. I wouldn't go to a top tier shop for this, I'd let the dealer handle the repair so it gets done to their liking since you'll be turning it in to them.

My kid was driving his car without a license with an appointment the next day and he rear ended someone. That's been fun. He happened to have his appointment paper with him so the cops let him go (no injuries) and he did get his license the next day. Now he has court this week though, since he didn't have it at the time of the accident AND he has to pay out of pocket for the damage to the other car.

Its a lease, its their car let them deal with it, I would just ask where to pick up the rental and when they are coming to get their smashed car, as long as the other driver was insured you should not get dinged on the insurance side....

I learned the hard way that you always get GAP insurance when you buy a new car {I don't think it applies on a lease, but it may, I have never leased a car}, I bought a brand new diesel 1 ton, 6 weeks old and it gets smashed, total loss.... $47K truck, but that was new, its not new anymore so its only worth $40,200 {yah that drive it off the lot thing is true}, so thats all the insurance pays, BUT if I got gap insurance for $118 it would have paid the difference between value and replacement cost, which would have been great because I bought it when they were on rebate and 6 weeks later there were no rebates and it cost me $51K to replace it.... So that accident that wasnt my fault and I was fully insured cost me 10 grand.... thanks always pay the 50-100 for the gap insurance...

GAP almost sounds like a scam... until you need it. I opted for it on my Type R and it paid off. Not only is it a rare model so they paid me higher than average for it (they have to go by what they're selling for because there is no bluebook for limited cars) AND I had the GAP - so I got 90% of the value of the car. My loan was paid off and I got cash on top.

I guess dousing it with gas and lighting it on fire wasn't possible at the scene since the DPS officer was there?

The car isn't destroyed. It's a solid 4K in damage I'd say, however. He hit the back corner so there's the whole bumper cover, internals, lights, sensors, and that stuff. I can't tell from the pictures if the trunk got it or not. The quarter panel is creased pretty good. Whatever.

I'll just take it to the dealer and go from there. The insurance will handle the damage, but I'm definately going to ask them to copensate me for whatever residual I'll lose.

Suggest you get it in writing from the dealer BEFORE you sign the insurance paper saying everything is done.
1) Ask the dealer to give you in writing the turn-in value/terms of the car after the lease, considering the accident.
2) Make sure the other guy's insurance pays you any difference from the non-wreck value/terms.
3) Then sign the paper saying everything is closed.

That's a bad one. At least no one was hurt, except the kid's pride and maybe his college fund.

I'm still waiting for my insurance company and it's now day 9 after the accident. I don't even know where my car is...
