IR repeater Volume run away

I have an unkown brand IR repeater system that I bought in 2008. Worked perfectly since then, I just replaced my Denon AVR with a Marantz Pre amp. Everything was great for about a week then I had a few runaway volume events where volume will continue up or down to the limit. It will lock for less than a minute before stopping IR signals and letting you control it. First it usually locks on volume up then if you try and correct it it goes all the way down. The IR is flashing at this time and will do it with any remote so It seems to be IR related and not the pre amp.

Has anyone had an issue like this with an IR repeater before that was able to resolve this? I work in CATV industry and have ran service calls where the volume was claimed to run away and they always had a IR repeater but now I am dealing with it at home and would like to know is this common, or maybe a known compatibility problem?

I am now using the marantz app for most control and never have an issue with it. I keep the marantz remote near by if I need to suddenly mute or reduce volume. I have had to resort to setting a volume lock in the preamp to 60 which sucks cause with music I would like to maybe go higher but wont because the volume will sometimes just take off. It's now to the point where it occurs one or more times a day.
