Howdy. This is my first post here. I just bought a Yamaha AV receiver with wifi. I love the Android app. I have some music stored in my tablet and am able to stream it to my receiver. Such a cool feature! I also have a Pure (brand) iPod dock connected to an optical input of the AVR. The Pure docks serially to the ipod and the output is purely digital. Probably the closest thing to playing a CD. I have a question though. Is the stream from my Android tablet an analog and probably compressed, etc stream and an inferior option to the Pure? I compared and cannot detect a difference yet. I have Klipsch R-28f's and a 12" powered sub. Even though I can't yet detect a difference, I'd like to know!
One thing the iPod has over the tablet, is that there is not a ff or rw or a time bar, etc when playing music on the tablet. It will play albums though, not just one selected song at a time. That would be a deal breaker!

The stream from the tablet is also digital, just one is wireless and one is via optical connection. Both are likely lossy/compressed digital files, depends what codec/bitrate are they stored on your ipod/tablet. Some people can't tell the difference between a CD and an mp3 even as low as 192kbps in some cases. You'd have to tell us what the file formats you're using on each device are.

You might download the bubblerupnp app for streaming content from your android device, if your Yamaha app doesn't provide the ff/rw/track selections you want (you sure about that with the Yamaha app? ...not a Yamaha owner myself). I use the bubbleupnp app to stream over my network, it works very well.

It'll view track selections of course. Just not time elapsed, etc. Good to know about the digital stream. Thx for that info! That's probably why I couldn't decipher the difference. The files I played/compared were from the Beatles box set at 320kbps. My iPod and tablet are the same files. I just ordered a 32 g card so I can store all of my tunes on my tablet. I also got a 30' optical cable to put the Pure near my favorite seating position. I'll look into that app.

"Old Brown Shoe" remastered version is a pretty terrific track to test out a system.
