iPod Classic audio format question

I am getting ready to purchase my first iPod and really like the storage capacity of the iPod Classic 120GB.

My question is, "Does the iPod classic support ALAC audio format?"

The site does not mention it but wikipedia said it did with the latest firmware update.

Can anyone confirm?

Thanks in advance for your help.

Do you mean FLAC or AAC? I believe AAC shouldn't be a problem.

Wikipedia lists it as Apple Lossless Audio Codec. The key word lossless. What is supported in this format?

Does iTunes support it?

What application would I use to transfer my CD's to my iPod using a lossless format?

Thanks again j!!!

Yes ALAC is supported on all iPod models except the shuffle IIRC. Although on the small 4-8GB models you'd be kinda crazy to use lossless.

Just convert your WAV files or rip new CDs in iTunes. If you've already got lossless stuff like FLAC I think you have to convert to WAV first using another program and then convert using iTunes.

Thanks gillow. Just the information I was looking for. I figure I can store 17,000+ full resolution songs on the iPod Classic with 120GB. That is way more storage than I have CD's so I think I am good to go. Can't wait to get one and hook it up to my car and home audio system.

I would double check your 17,000 tracks.

Average CD rip for me with ALAC is 400-500MB.

Even on the low end of 400, you can fit 286 albums. That's around 3-4 thousand tracks, not 17 thousand.

Really, I thought the file size would be about the same as the original CD size (70MB). That is how I did the math. Thanks for the heads up. I have about 300 CD's so that should still be plenty of storage but I would never of guessed ALAC took up that much space.

Thanks again!!!

Edit: Or is a CD 700MB? Oops!!!
