Maybe it is just me but the picture they show looks like this receiver is on the light side. It is very thin. Doesn't seem to be room for a good amp. But that is very impressive to have HDMI upconvert for that price. Hopefully other manufactures will try to compete with that real soon.

JVC current line of receivers incorporate digital amplifiers. They are known to be a lot smaller in size.
If you need another example, check out Harman Kardon's line of DPR series digital amplifier receivers. They are are about half the height of HK's regular line of receivers and also weigh substantially less.

It may have HDMI, but it's not even in the same class as the RX-V4600.
.....how so, Votrax?....I'm curious about this one......

For the same reason I wouldn't compare a Sony STR-DE898 and a Denon AVR-3805.

.....Votrax, what I'm really curious about would be the processing section of the current surround receivers....is one brand considered to have a better processing section than the others?.....

I personally don't think there is a great difference between manufacturer's surround processing sections. I think the quality of components down stream of the DSP is what really makes the difference. Generally the more you pay for an AV receiver the better components & construction. Obviously you won't find $25 Burr Brown op amps in low end receivers. It's still pretty amazing you can purchase an AV receiver for $200 with the amount of circuitry involved.

.....thanks, Votrax....where I'm going with this is possibly running into a surround receiver that still has a good processing section and pre-amp section, but from there on has been ruled non-functional at a repair shop referring to the amp sections specifically....maybe someone else might have opinions about processor sections as to which brand is best?.....

Curious, do you mean comparing the sony/3805 to the jvc?

or the sony/3805 to the 4600?

What I meant was comparing the JVC to the Yamaha is like comparing the Sony to the Denon.

I'm not saying the JVC is not good, just not the same level as the Yamaha. JVC does manufacture quality products so I'm sure the RX-D702 is a decent receiver for the price.

What model is it? If you have some decent soldering skills you could always upgrade a few components to make it an even better pre-amp.

.....no, Votrax, I meant I might be on the lookout for such a surround receiver that has lost it's amplification but that's all....then the processor section could be used....I know the owner of a local repair shop pretty well, and will alert him to help me watch for one....I think I will specify a Yamaha as their pre-outs are supposed to be the most accessable....is that right, guys?......

I understand now. I don't think you could go wrong with a Yamaha.

BTW... you can pick up the JVC RX-D702B at Vanns for $599 with free shipping.

......guys, I don't work for JVC, and if you have a HK surround receiver for each day of the week, that's your business, but I know the sound quality I hear every time I go visit my Daughter and Son-in-law, and hear that JVC el-cheapo surround receiver that was $186 to my door, and I'm after quality bang-for-the-buck, how about youse?......
