I am trying to compare the integra dtr8.8 and the denon 4308. Costwise they are similar, but I don't know enough about quality and features for these companies/units. Any info or opinions everyone can offer would be appreciated.

Both of these units should be excellent. They both have far too many features to list out or that you will use. They should both power almost any speaker out there without any problem. Do you have an Integra dealer locally? They do not ship out of state and do not sell online so if you don't have a dealer your choice may be made for you.

The Integra will not power speakers - it is simply a preamp and has no power source dedicated to this end. One will need an amp if they wish to power their speakers with this unit.
Sorry avaserfi but you are wrong here. The 9.8 is the preamp the 8.8 is a receiver almost the same as the Onkyo 905.

No problem. Too many numbers for too many models. The only reason I know this one is I own the Onkyo clone of the 9.8 and I have spent many o hours reading the 140+ page threads on these units over at avs.

Yes and at a street price of quite a bit under it's MSLP, the Onkyo 905 might be a good option.

For reference...

The Onkyo TX-SR805 is equivelant to the Integra DTR-7.8 and the Onkyo TX-SR875 is equivelant to the Integra DTR-8.8 (the unit in question). I have seen both the Onkyo and Integra units and can personally atest to their build quality being solid, in line with any other receivers aside from a few specialty brands. The TX-NR905 has not Integra equivelant listed on their website. People have confused this a few times. The DTC-9.8 is a preamp only, and at this moment there is no DTR-9.8 (which if there was would be the equivelant of the Onkyo TX-NR905). I believe that Onkyo/Integra figures the Integra line's top end model should be seperates, not an AVR (hence why there is not an Integra DTR-9.anything).

To compare the Onkyo TX-SR875/Integra DTR-8.8 to the Denon...

Both the Denon and Onkyo/Integra feature network interfaces along with a USB port for streaming from an USB device. There have been a lot of complaints about the Onkyo/Integra networking abilities, Denon seems to have a much better track record in this regard. I like the look of the Onkyo TX-SR875 over the Integra and Denon. If I had to pick between the Denon and Integra for looks, it would be the Denon. For build quality (quality of parts etc...), the Integra would be the sure winner (may be the same as the Onkyo, not verifiable by me either way). They offer similar decoding and switching abilities with proper amounts of expandability. The Onkyo/Integra units probably have an edge in power as well, but not likely enough to be a big concern, if at all. The Onkyo/Integra are THX Ultra II certified, which means their amplifiers are stable with 4 ohm loads.

Seth, you are a veritable fount of knowledge but I'm not sure you got this one right. The Denon 4308, Integra DTR 8.8 and the Onkyo 905 (as well as the Integra DCT 9.8) all have dual (as in two) HDMI outputs. The Onkyo TX-SR875 only has one HDMI out. I have never seen an Onkyo to Integra equivalent chart on either of their sites but perhaps I just missed it. If you look at the specs, the 905 and 8.8 are a match and the 875 is not.

You are absolutely right.

The TX-NR905 is the equivalent to the Integra DTR-8.8. Sorry for the mix-up.:( The TX-NR905 and DTR-8.8 both feature a toroidal power transformer for the amplifier and separate power supplies for audio and video sections.:)

I still think the Onkyo TX-NR905/TX-SR875/TX-SR805 look better.

Basically it boils down to this. If you don't need network ability, get the TX-SR875 (still more power than the Denon more than likely). If you don't need scalers on the reciever (say you have a very good Upscaling DVD player or HD player [Blu-ray/HD DVD] or you have a high end TV) get the TX-SR805 (had better power benchtests than the TX-SR875 reportedly). If you want Network abilities, but don't need the scaler, get the Integra DTR-7.8. They literally have a piece of equipment for everyone.:D

TXNR100 Onkyo.
If you read what they have done with this unit and how they treat their currant
customers. You would most likely buy the Denon. Or any other brand.
Jack Cooper is national service manager for Onkyo USA.He is not true to his word when they offer to look after you.
ONKYO TX-NR1000 sold as the last receiver you will ever own.
They mean to say the last ONKYO you will ever own.
You should also look at the Marantz.Great bang for the buck.
5 Grand retail turned into 5 Dollars scrap metal.
