I recently purchased an Insignia IS-HC040917 ON ebay and am unable to turn it on and off with the manual control. I can turn it off and on with the remote and everything works fine with the remote. I have studied the manual and am still was unable to get it to work. From what I read, it appears to me that the standby light should be lit with the unit plugged in. Could somebody please help. If I am doing something wrong, I would be willing to look stupid to get it to work.

This is just the way the receiver was designed. You can turn it on I believe by pressing the sleep button (the button nearest to the hard power switch). It cannot be put into standby unless you use the remote or press the sleep button, in which case it will not go into standby until the sleep timer has expired.:)

For the money it isn't a bad receiver. It has a toroidal power supply (pretty much un-seen in this level of receiver. It has very adequate storage capacity, can handle transients at most levels with ease in mid-size rooms. And it also has discrete output stages, also very uncommon in this price range. I assume you got it for around $60 or less, so you got a very good deal.:)
