I am going to be buying a Denon AVR-380x(5 or 6) for my reciever. While looking at the specs it led me to believe I would need to buy an external amp to power my sub. Please let me know if this is true or if I will be able to power my sub with this unit? Thanks

FYI I plan on getting a 12" sub, not sure what brand or type yet but it will be a 12.

Since you don't have the sub already, I don't think you will find too many on the market that aren't active (self powered) unless you specifically go looking for one that is passive. This is because you don't really want your reciever to have to provide power to reproduce the lowest frequencies which are the most demanding. So, nothing to worry about.

What's your price range and how big is your room?

The room is just over 2000 cubic feet and I am unsure as to the budget. I did look at the sub I had in mind which is this one. The sub is powered but I failed to notice that it was before, sorry I didn't research further. Thanks

As stated before you should not need a seprate amp to power a sub , however if you are purchasing a H.I.B. then some of these have a driver that soley depends on the reciever for it's power which robs the other channels of thier power . If your sub has an internal or sometimes extrenal amp the reciever only sends the LFE to the sub nothing else ( I think the term is LFE ) . BTW why a 12" sub , did you know that you can go as small as a 8" driver that pumps out 1500 watts rms ? As the case of the sunfire true super junior . I think you might have more impact by being heard not seen Or that case Felt . ;)

But physics dictate that an 8" driver just can't go as low as a 12" driver, regardless of how much power you try to push through it.

I personally don't think that the EP350 is a good value. It only goes down to 28Hz. At the same price point, you can find offerings from Hsu and SVS with lower extension and higher output.

Well I definately want a 12", could you maybe post what subs you recommend from HSU and SVS? This is not the right forum for it so maybe you should PM me with it if you don't mind. Thanks very much for your input.

Definitely check out the VTF3 & the STF3. Both are great 12 inch subs. The only difference in these 2 subs (as I undersatnd it) is the VTF has variable port tuning, while the STF's tuning is fixed; and the VTF offers choices in finishes and slightly more power.

Another vote for SVS

I have over 2000 cubic feet and I just purchased a SVS PB10-isd - yes, it's 10" but a POWERFUL 10" - I could not image having a 12' SVS unit in my house. Another reason I choose the 10" is because the size of the 12" SVS units are huge... I love my 10" and it states it will go down to 20 hz :)

yeah if you're looking into subs chances are it will be a powered sub which will present no problems with either receiver:)

Axiom setup

If you plan on an Axiom speaker setup, consider saving up for the EP500. Or you could purchase the 350 and upgrade later if you thought it didn't provide enough bass.

I ran test tones the other day. I'm getting decent output at 18Hz, and still some at 16Hz.
