I am considering buying either of the following combinations of Infinity speakers for a room that is approximately 14' x 25' x 15'H (cathedral ceiling). We will listen more to music than movies.

A) Kappa 400 or 600 fronts; kappa center; kappa rear; PS12 subwoofer
for a total cost of $2,500 to $2,600

or

B) Intermezzo 4.1T fronts w/powered sub; kappa center; kappa rear for a total cost of $3,670

FYI, the receiver is a Denon 2802.

Any thoughts, please?

Intermezzos! Well, hmm...

The Intermezzos received a very good review in I think Absolute Sound, measured by someone who knows his stuff.

If I'm recalling correctly, this has the R.A.B.O.S. system for the built-in sub. This is a GREAT idea when you tune it properly: flatter response and free up amplifier power. (If you go for an outboard sub instead, get the R.A.B.O.S.).

Kappas are nice but ultimately fairly ordinary. Intermezzo 4.1s are MUCH more striking looking!

The only possible negative is that the powered sub being built-in does not allow placement flexibility. Also, I don't remember if there are separate line-level inputs. Some powered sub speakers don't have RCA ins but just tap the audio from the main speakers-YUK!

Did you mean that the Kappas are fairly ordinary in appearance or performance relative to the Intermezzo 4.1s?

Infinity Intermezzo

I had the Infinity Intermezzo 2.6 speakers. I had some trouble with one of the amps, but other than that they were good small speakers. The bass amps make them very easy to drive. RABOS is a great idea, but it takes some time and dedication to use it.

I currently own Infinity Interlude 40's, Primus 160's and Kappa 200's. These are all good speakers, especially the Interlude 40's. I would go with the Intermezzo 4.1 for the mains in the system. They have plenty of bass, so no subs are needed. Don Keele reviewed them in The Audio Critic and found them to sound almost identical to his B&W Signaure 801 III speakers. This is probably a good thing. Audio Advisor and Spearit are blowing these out for about $2500.

I own the Infinity Alphas 40 (main)/37c (center)/25es (bipole/dipole surround)/1200s (subwoofer with RABOS) and am very happy with the overall sound they reproduce. They aren't as pretty as Infinity's higher end stuff, but are a great value and are constructed of the same CMMD technology. The RABOS on the sub really smooths out the bass peak I was experiencing in my room. Online retailers seem to be blowing these things out for pretty cheap now. Under $2K for sure.

Update

I just received the speakers, including the Kappa 600 fronts, kappa C/L/R, Kappa surrounds and Velodyne subwoofer. Although the Intermezzo 4.1s were tempting, I was able to get all the speakers listed above for less than price as the Intermezzos alone.

I probably won't get an opportunity to set them up until this weekend, but will certainly post my reaction.

In the meanwhile, has anyone used Cobalt Cable, Ultimate Speaker Wire?

Thanks,
