Infinite Baffle - not popular?

Did a bit of searching and am surprised there is little to no talk of infinite baffle subs. I have done some research and they really seem to be the best way to go for super low extension and uncolored bass. What are the minuses I am missing out on (other than construction)? Why do most of the members on this board choose traditional arrangements? Does anybody on this board use IB? I am seriously considering setting up an IB design in my HT...any suggestions / hints?

There is a cult like following on some of the other forums such as AVS, hometheatertalk, etc. Not much discussion for the most part on DIY projects here. I think most people are against such a concept for the reason you mentioned in construction and the WAF. They sound like the ultimate in the price/performance ratio.

I still have a 15 inch Audiobahn 1200 watt sub in my basement.
Perhaps I should throw that at my system. Too bad it runs at 1 ohm.

Construction is not that difficult. But, where is that baffle location? It will get loud in there as well:D
If the attic or crawlspace, the neighbors will be po'ed:rolleyes:

No, just another piece of the next HT plan I've been thinking about implementing. Where can I find Tom's setup?

He has a write up about his setup in the Jun 1999 issue of Sound&Vision, page 105-109, 'The Subwoofer that shook the world.'

Unfortunately I didn't see that far back in the S&V archives. But it is a neat setup. His Inf Baf is his lower level, I guess his basement.

As a member of the cult I would highly recommend at least considering building an IB sub if your house can support it. It is really high quality bass compared to the other options. Tom V (SVS) recommended that if I were up to it an IB sub would always be a better value for the performance than a commercial sub. It is up to you..

IB is definitely the way to go if you're not afraid to cut out a hole in the floor or ceiling. It will take a bit of rough carpentry or drywall work/framing to do it, but it's worth it. You'll also want a solid pro amp and BFD. Here's some of my favorite pics of IB's. Imagine 12 - 15" or 4 - 18" drivers pumping bass throughout your house.

Nice. As one can see, not too terribly complicated, just need space and understanding neighbors:D

just means you dont use the back of the speaker {compression is sometimes better then free air}.a tuned port will help it out below the speakers range.20-50 hz.the baffel is the back space.some jl audio speakers for car,s are mounted backwards, deeper bass.besides the folded horn,s such as klipch corner horns have the cult following.
