Inconsistent volume

I just installed a subwoofer in my car and it is inconsistent when it comes to it's volume. When i'm listening to music, most of the time it's at a solid volume, but if the song has a really low note, the sub plays that one low note at about double the volume for some reason...When it does this it drowns out the rest of the speakers

It does this when the notes are very low, so it doesnt come up in many songs, but it's enough to be annoying

It's a pretty cheap setup, it's a JL audio 125w RMS 10 inch sub, and a 125w rms pheonix gold amp. Both at 4 ohms.

Why does it do this? and can i fix it by adjusting the filters on the amp?

If the amp has dials labeled boost and or boost frequency, or a selector switch for 40hz boost, turn them down or turn them off. You may also have a loudness setting activated on your head unit or have equalization set up before you added the sub, try lowering the very low eq adjustments in your head unit.

i put the head unit at completely flat, no equalizer changes. But the problem was still there, so i adjusted the bass boost on my amp, and if i turn of the bass boost, the subwoofer doesnt make any sound. Even with the "level" knob(which i assume is the same as gain?) maxed out, without the bass boost turned up a bit the subwoofer doesnt function at all.
