If it were for just getting music into a room, in walls are OK. If you are looking for a solid performing system then in-walls would not be my choice for the front stage.

Did you already pull the trigger on some speakers?

IMO, in-wall or in-ceiling is excellent for the non-tweaker who wants a good system (or if you've got the dough, a great system), but doesn't have the space for a "conventional" setup.

My room is smaller thank yours, and since I'm pressed for space in comparison, I came super close to doing in-wall/ceiling speakers, but then I realized I wanted the ability to switch around my setups as I pleased, and be able to sell off older gear to recoup the cost of new gear. I have had quite a few different setups over the past couple years, and have been quite content with them all, but I'm still on the prowl for something better. If that's your style, or you think it might be, start off with a set of used towers, etc. from Craigslist as something to hold you over til you can put the dough down on something sick.

In-wall speakers can be alright, but you had better make sure you figure out exactly which ones you want before you actually try them in place, and you need to figure out exactly where you want them before installation. With ordinary speakers, if you don't like the sound, repositioning the speakers is generally relatively easy, but changing your room layout with in-wall speakers involves putting new holes in your walls and patching up the old ones, not to mention the bother of rerouting the wires.

In most cases, I think people would be better off with regular speakers, but the in-walls have the advantage of being out of the way.

I've used decent Sonance speakers, Speaker Craft, B&W, and others.

At the end of the day, I've gone to Monoprice 8" 3-way speakers whenever I need to go in-wall. Their performance at reasonable volume levels is as good as any other in-wall speaker that I've used to this point. The exception being some very expensive Sonance ones.

On a budget, I think using your wall cavity instead of a cheap speaker cabinet always saves you money and allows your money to go to the drivers instead of cheap woodwork and heavy prices for shipping overseas.

The added size of the Monoprice 8" 3-way design adds more oomph to the lower end which many in-walls lack. As well, I find that to get the equivalent sound from a tower/bookshelf speaker you are typically spending 4x as much, or more, rather easily.

If these are for HT, check into in-walls from:

Triad
Atlantic Technology
Tannoy
Bohlender Graebener
Klipsch THX

For music the paradigms are a solid lower cost option in the SA-35.

In general if you are able to build an enclosure into the wall or use a speaker with a custom enclosure it will perform better.
