"In wall" speaker acrostics

I have a built in surround sound system that's 14 yr.s old. The L/R speakers are Infinity 2way. The woofers are failing and I'm replacing them with another brand of woofer.
As a noob I am assuming that most any in wall installation is going is compromise between sound quality and the practicality of getting the speakers out of the way.
My question involves the acoustics of the hollow frame wall installation. When I installed these years ago, and without any knowledge of acoustics, I decided it would be a good idea to stuff the wall cavity with fiberglass insulation to reduce the hollow echo. Now I'm thinking, was that a mistake? Should I leave it in, tear it out, or do something else?
The spaces are studs and sheetrock with another room on the other side. The dimensions are...
17"w x 35"h x 5"d
17"w x 48"h x 5"d
Any advice would be appreciated, John
