In Ceiling Subwoofer Vibration??

I'm a newbie and glad to have found your site!! Just about to move into home we just built. Wife won't allow the "ugly" floor subwoofer so I will go with an in ceiling type. Room is 30 x 15 with 10 ft ceilings. Since the application (I believe) is to secure it between the rafters, is there vibration transmission along the rafters with such an application?? Concerned with vibration/sound transmitting to next room at a nominal volume level. Have installed "quiet rock" on ceiling, walls of this particular room and the room it adjoins to. Are there subs that inherently vibrate less but produce the desired sound? Do these in ceiling subwoofers come close to the performance of floor standing?? Thanks!

A great infinite baffle sub is the 15" Tempest-X at www.diycable.com. It offers loads of linear clean excursion and would do a great job in your application. I would do two of them with a Behringer EP2500 and have world class low end for about $700.00.

If you design the plenum correctly, you could make it expandable for adding another two drivers or more while keeping the same amplifier.

Or, while he is at it, and house allows for it, make expansion for future 18" drivers, 4 or more:D But, he needs to check house foundation hold downs so his house will stay in place:D

Not many options with such restrictions:eek:
Make sure the sub is tightly secured in wall, if that is the way you need to go, as otherwise the resonances will be unpleasant. If you can and permitted, do an infinite baffle as suggested.

Unfortunately, while a manifold type IB sub may not transmit mechanical vibrations to the structure, the sound backwave from the drivers are not isolated from the rest of the house. The self-contained systems from Velodyne, Def Tech, Triad, etc. are what the OP is looking for. The better systems perform comparably to their in-room counterparts but may be cost prohibitive. In a room your size, I would think two sub systems would provide the best performance. But of course that's a matter of preference.

No more sub , that mean no in wall sub either. If you set up for movies, I think you better think about basshaker.

You guys that let your wives tell you what you can and can't have in your house, crack me up.

I guess I'm lucky in that my wife doesn't really care.

When mama ain't happy ...

... No one is happy. It is a matter of politcs and diplomacy and "wording the question right".

So let's see you want to ungrade to a $2,000 Marantz receiver. The actual specs and features don't matter. You go out and find a full blown expensive receiver like a McIntosh Power Amp MC2KW ($35,000) and Pre Amp MX120 ($6,800) then you say Do you think we should get this really expensive McIntosh system or get this very reasonably priced Marantz receiver ?

That's worth a try. I'm in the process of trying to get an Ultra right now, but I think this is more an asthetic issue then it is a price issue. :(

Great technique... but I fear my wife is catching on to the gig, as I've used it a few too many times.
