In Ceiling Speakers

First let me say that i know the questions I am are not the optimal setup but I have to keep my wife happy. We are about to do some rework in our family room and for movies we use a 65" Sony 850 model tv connected to a Yamaha 1070 receiver. The room is approximately 20 x 18 (12 ft ceilings) with the TV mounted over the fireplace. The speakers are Def Tech Pro Cinema 600s attached to brackets. Now that all that is stated.....

As we remodel my wife is wanting me to move the speakers from external to be recessed in the ceiling. What are the best options for the front LCR speakers? Would a B&W 6.5 in work if i placed one as each of the LCR? I dont think there is going to be an option to cut into the fire place to put a center channel and was wondering if being able to direct the tweeter would suffice.

TIA

In ceilings will be disapointing for the front 3. Especially with 12 foot ceilings. Can you do in walls for left and right? Youd be better off with no center than a ceiling center.

Yeah, the only speakers that belong in the ceiling are the two or four ceiling Atmos speakers. And get the 8" ceiling speakers if you can.

Wives are ruining HT systems around the country!

Seriously...if at all possible...if your TV is wall mounted...put LCR inwall speakers underneath the TV.

If you must do in ceiling...I agree with post #2...skip the CC and just do L&R and go phantom ctr...the inceiling CC will never sound right.

We really didn't evolve to hear sounds above us especially well!
These look pretty good, show her some photos and see if she will compromise!

Also, you might look at On-wall speakers. If nothing else you can propose them to set up a compromise with in-wall speakers!:D

Last, you can go full Monte and set up speakers behind a wall with an acoustically transparent projector screen:

Don't waste your money. Those ceiling speakers will be worse than the TV speakers. What you propose will be a disaster. If you do what you propose both of you will be unhappy. Just go ahead and do the job properly, when she hears it and gets to enjoy it you will both be happy. Speakers are NOT all ugly. Speakers are now an expected and accepted part of the decor in any TV set up used for serious viewing.

A big part of your trouble is a TV over the fireplace. That is a terrible location as it is too high. Those set ups are by definition ugly, visually and aurally.

So change your TV location in the remodel. Then your aesthetics will start from a much better vantage point.

The bottom of a TV screen should be 30" from the floor, or very close. No exceptions.

Triad's InCeiling 45 degree angled speakers are the only serious in-ceiling speakers I sell to my customers. The sound appears to come directly from the TV and Triad will paint the grills to match your ceiling. They sound great.

You will need 8" of space above the ceiling to accommodate this speaker.

They also make fantastic in-wall models as well.
