In-Ceiling Speakers on a budget, need help please.

Hello everyone,

This is my first post, and I could use some help. I am in the process of closing on my first house, and after I close, I would like to install in-ceiling speakers through parts of the house, and maybe a couple around the outside patio for entertainig at parties, etc. Basically they would be used for background music mostly, so I don't think I need a real high end speaker for this.

Anyway, there are tons of speakers out there, and I am on a budget as you can imagine. I am looking for the best bang for my buck, and what I can get away with without spending a ton of money, but still sound fine for this type purpose. I am sure it will make many of you cringe, but I am fine with buying off of ebay to save some money, especially b/c of the limited purpose of the speakers, but I don't know what to get. Maybe someone can also suggest a good inexpensive receiver to look at that will have a way to control the different speakers in different zones...ie. play speaker in bathroom, but not through rest of house, etc. etc. I don't know what color ceilings will be (probably just white) so if it is ok to paint the covers, that may be good to know.

I feel like I am going to have to get a new surround sound system too for my den eventually, especially since I plan on buying a flat screen, but I will leave that for another post.

Thank you everyone for your help!!! :D

DIY distributed audio

SC,
PM me if you want more info on my DIY distributed audio system. Basically you can use a powerful receiver or stereo amp to drive several pairs of speakers with impedance matching volume controls in each room. Higher end distribution amps with keypads will allow you to play different sources in each room but will cost a lot more.

If the house is not finished, have them run the 14/4 speaker wire from a centeral receiver/amp location, to a VC box in each room, 14/2 x 2 from the VC to the proposed speaker locations.

The Phoenix Gold speakers are great for background music but I would get something better for the main HT. Yes you can paint the metal grill covers.
