I'm planning on distributed audio in multiple zones in my house. Are there any online tools that anyone can recommend that would help determine number speakers, size of speaker, placement of speakers, etc for various room sizes?

In ceiling speakers in a home except for Dolby Atmos are a really bad idea. That is out of date, and were basically background music systems. There are now better options like the Sonus systems for instance. Peppering your home with ceiling speakers will just give your home the aura of a shopping mall, and is a quite ghastly idea.
