Impedance/Ohm questions

I have read a few threads and posts about impedance and ohms but I cant seem to find the answer I'm looking for.

I currently own a Sony DA1ES Receiver and following are power output ratings taken from my user manual:
8 ohms, 20Hz-20kHz, THD .09%, 100W+100W
4 ohms, 20Hz-20kHz, THD .09%, 80W+80W

I am looking to buy new speakers but I am unsure if I should be looking for 8 or 4 ohm speakers. The system will be used for movies/music and the budget is $1000. Can someone please help me in determining which impedance to use?

You typically need a significantly more powerful amp to power a 4-ohm load. I would either look into 8-ohm speakers only or consider buying an external amp (and use the receiver's preamp output, if it has them) to power a 4-ohm pair.

8 ohm looks like your best bet. Or to get another amp as stated avove. A lower load would put a larger strain on your receiver. As the load goes down the Amps go up. Too many Amps and your amp clips &/or overheats.
