Image compressed on rear projection

I have noticed that the image on my 51" sony rear projection TV is slightly ... squished. Meaning that if a perfect circle (like a CBS logo) were to be put in the center of my screen, it would appear a bit like an egg standing on end. Now I have read in a couple of books on how to ... tinker with the image, but the question I have is this ...

Assuming adjusting the image on my TV is like adjusting the image on my PC monitor, wouldn't stretching the image the way it needs to be stretched cause one of two things to happen: Either I will cut off a bit of the image on both ends, or I will get black lines on the top and bottom.

Or, should I assume since the image is compressed, that I am currently missing a bit of the top and bottom and pushing the top down and the bottom up, will fix the problem.

Is this something that is difficult to adjust? I am pretty savvy when it comes to tinkering with the workings of these kinds of things, but is this something that I should consider paying someone to do?

Your thoughts ...

I would try a different aspect ratio setting to see if this corrects your problem. An auto setting should fix you up but you may have to fix it to the aspect of your tv to get best performance.

If this does not work, then you need someone to come in and set it for you.
