Hi all, ive been mucking around with my home theater trying to set it up but here is the problem I just don't know what I am doing. my two front speakers have amps. an subs in them I have them set on the amp to large an on the back of them to LFE an set to O degree. all the other speakers are set to small. my other two subs are at 0 phase an the cross over at 90 is this right? I AM in southern alberta is there anyone else from around here who could help me out. thanks for any help an sorry for the long post.

Run your separate subs where the powered subs in your tower begin to fade in output. What are they rated to?

Example: Say your fronts go to 40Hz. You would cross-out your subwoofers at 50Hz or so. And set your subwoofer filter in your amp to 80Hz.

Hi,

You can think of the wave from each sub as having peaks and valleys (actually, they're compression waves, but for understanding what's going on, peaks and valleys work better). Now with different subs in different locations playing the same signal, the peaks and valleys arrive at different times and the offset can cause the peak to fill in the valley reducing the sound level and muddying it a bit.

This is the phase control issue and while for engineering math reasons is measured in degrees, what it actually does is advance and retard the timing of the peaks and valleys so that they will all arrive at your ears at about the same time. The easiest way to set it is to have some sort of constant bass signal playing and have someone adjusting the phase control until the bass signal is loudest. The means the minimum of peaks filling in the valleys and the best match for phase.

In terms of the cross over, I've always heard that you want about an octave overlap, so if your speakers are pretty flat to say... 40 hz, then set the crossover to 80 on the sub you're trying to match. Obviously, it costs you nothing to experiment so these are just starting suggestions. What sounds best to you is what is best for you.

Hope this helps.

Well, a large speaker should be able to play down to 20Hz. Your subwoofer can, so I would set them small, and cross them out at 50Hz.

confused

okay I set the crossover on my big sub to 50Hz it aso has a phase knob an it has aswitch what says 100 or 80?an on the big speakers I reset them back to small so should the togle switches on the back be set to high level or LFE?
an my sub behind the couch has on knobs that say high phase low phase?
when you do a pink noise test how come you do't get anything from a sub? thanks again for all the help.

Ok, phase switches and knobs should be adjusted until you like the sound. If you like the sound when they are a 0 or 180 degrees, leave them.

Your main speakers have inputs for high level (speaker wire) and LFE (RCA mono cord). If you are not running an RCA cord, keep them on High level. And since you have a subwoofer, I would keep them on high level.

Again, phase is something you need to experiment with. There is no right or wrong. Play around with the knob, but generally 0 or 180 degrees sounds alright.

The sub should only play when there is sound in the bass region. If the pink noise doesn't have a lot of bass it in, the sub won't play very much.

I prefer using Music and movies to test out my setup.

That switch is the highpass filter. Its only for use with the High Level inputs (speaker wire). Since your using the RCA mono jack, don't worry about it.

www.realmofexcursion.com Click this link and go to the downloads page. It will have bass heavy songs and test tones as well as sweeps.
