I have been trying to figure this out for a few days now and cannot seem to find a solution. As a matter of fact, I just keep getting more confused as to what it is I am doing.

Just recently got a 65" SUHD 4K Curved Smart TV JS9800 Series 9.
I'm trying to hook everything up through the TV (using HDMI) and then use the ARC HDMI to get 5.1 out of AVR.

I have an Onkyo TX-NR626 with some PolkAudio RM6751s set up around the room.
I set up the TV and AVR for ANYNET+ and the whole system seems to work, but only for the front speakers, nothing is going to the rear.

I've tried changing the HDMI Audio Format on the tv from Bitstream to PCM and back with not difference.
Also tried all combinations of Audio Format on the tv as well.

I ran the auto Audyssey setup on the AVR and it knows that it has the two surround speakers and can play from them but won't work when I try to run something from the TV, Xbox One or the Roku that is connected to the tv.

Am I missing something or misunderstanding something? ARC should be able to pass 5.1 to the receiver right?

found this from onkyo.

Enter HARDWARE SETUP - HDMI - ENABLE HDMI CTRL (RIHD) - Make sure that ARC is set to AUTO. (Power down all equipment then use the TV remote to turn ON the TV first.) You will need to make sure that the CEC function on your TV is fully enabled.

I've seen a few sites that talk about how arc can be a little iffy being fairly new and still largely unused, but has lots of potential.

why not run everything from the avr ? There is good chance your not going to get 5.1 from the smart tv apps.

Thanks for the responses!

I can't run everything through the AVR only because it won't support 4k w/ HDR. Onkyo said that it would have to be a completely different chip to allow for HDR and so a firmware upgrade would not be able to make the 626 HDR compatible.

My hope was that the ARC would be a fix for this instead of having to buy a new AVR. Just run all devices to the 4k UHD w/ HDR tv and then just have the AVR do 5.1 sound...

So far, no dice...

I'll try what Pogre suggested and repost the new findings.

How many of your source devices provide 4K/HDR? My guess is maybe one. You'll probably spend more on HDMI cables that can handle the demand than the cost of a new AVR- consider replacing that and using it to do your switching, with the added benefit of needing short cables that cost less. Make sure you can easily replace the cabling that goes to the TV, too- there's no way it will work forever and it's a matter of when, not if it will fail.

Thank you for all the help.

I have 2 4k/HDR sources; Roku and XBox 1 S.

But after powering everything down, checking connections again and changing out a few of the older HDMI cables it all seems to be working!

I know I will have to change out my AVR someday but I am glad it wasn't today!

Thanks again!
