i was wondering if some one could help me out or at least point me in the right direction please? im trying to put together a home surround sound system 5.1.
what i have;
2 jbl ghe 1000 speakers. i know they are old but they have only been used 20 hours & then boxed up the whole time.
harman kardon avr 1700
2 jbl n24 surround speakers

i guess my question is where to go from here? do i stay with jbl speakers? can i mix the center speaker & sub? im on a very tight budget & ive been looking at stuff on ebay. does the JBL N Center Version II. Center Channel Speaker. Northridge Series sound ok for a center speaker or ????
ive heard of voice compatibility with the speakers what ever that is?
my sub i havent looked for yet.
if anyone could please help me out i would greatly thank you!

would the jbl 120c or the jbl es25c be better than the jbl n version II? i can get a smoking deal on the n center speaker

What you are asking may be a bit tough to answer as nothing will really pair directly with your GHE 1000 speakers. The 3-way design using a 10" woofer tends to produce a full range sound which just doesn't match up with anything else. It can be a bit boomy in terms of sound, and will overpower most center channels and surrounds. But, you can adjust the A/V receiver typically to help it to blend with whatever speaker you end up pairing it to.

I think my recommendation would be that if you would like to have an upgradable system, that perhaps your focus should be on purchasing gear that will match for a better upgrade path instead of blending with what you have right now. Look for reviews on specific speakers you are considering, and go listen to them if you can.

Of the choices given, the ES25c seems like the better choice to match across your fronts.

You really don't need to worry about matching a sub. Just look for one that plays as deep as you need with enough power for your room. For the best value, I would encourage you to look at internet direct brands like SVS and Hsu and a few others. Most of the consumer brand subs aren't very good or are too expensive for what you get.

You probably don't even need a sub. The towers can handle the bass, if it's not enough bass for your liking, then by all means add a sub. Set your sub output to off in your manual speaker settings, the receiver should send bass that would otherwise go to the sub to the front L/R channels. Rear speakers do not need to be matched, they are for background ambient sounds, what you have is sufficient. The "voice compatability" you refer to is called timbre matching. This applies mostly to your tweeters in the front three L/C/R speakers. There is some conjection as to whether this makes a difference. I personally feel it does, JMO. ES25c would be a good choice. It may not be "timbre" matched but it will get you by. ;)
