Hello everybody, just found this site a bit ago and have alot of reading to do. I just bought a Toshiba 50HX81 last night for a good deal in brand new condition and I want some feedback from other owners as to calibraition/tuning tips, as well as what I have to do to get HD out of regular cable and what are the best components to work with this unit. I just got a JVC DVD VCR combo also, so that is what I have to work with. I probably need to buy a HD tuner some tips on these would be nice also.

thanks

Definitely need an HD tuner. Perhaps your cable company has this option for you. That will also be how you can get HD channels to your new TV as well. Be advised, not everything is shot in HD yet, so some of what you get (ok LOTS) will be up-converted material from standard NTSC format.

Congrats on the purchase. You've got 2 component inputs on that thing so I'd recoomend hooking up your DVD video connection directly to the TV.

Hawke, thanks for the info. I just briefly hooked up the DVD with an S VIdeo cable to test last night, was too late to really fool with it. The guy I got it from had it super dialed in, but I had to re calibrate the convergence since we moved it. Will the focus need to be done also?

on HD Recievers I read somewhere that the only way to get an HD signal is over the air using an antenna, that if you go over Cable you will not get the HD signal. Is this true? I would hate to go buy a reciever and have it be useless because I don't want to use antennas, just the cable that I already have.

thanks

As I "hinted" at before, you need a digital cable box specifically set up for HD, and you have to subscribe to the HD network and cable channels. Not sure what's available on satellite, but you can inquire there as well. I wouldn't recommend using an antenna.

I recently purchased a Pioneer vsx411 receiver (my first venture into the wonderful world of surround sound). Here's my problem(s). I have to crank this thing up to at least 50 (the volume setting goes from 99/low - 01/hi) to get a decent volume (my old receiver of 15 years/Technics, I could get a kick a-- volume at 2 or 3 (1/low 10/hi). I have my dvd player hooked up to the receiver (optical) and the same thing - low volume. I also have a AudioSource EQ that is hooked up to the Pioneer receiver. If I run the dvd through my TV w/rca jacks the volume is so much better (louder and crisper). My Sony mini-disc player/recorder has digital and analog connections - problem is the mini-disc has an Optical "IN" and my receiver has both coax/optical "IN". Any suggestions
