I've been looking at streamers as well but I can't figure out (other than price) why I'd buy one rather than hooking up a computer to the tv via hdmi (which is my current set-up). A computer will not only play pandora and netflix but also play all your ripped music. Nettops are pretty cheap as are netbooks and you may have an old computer sitting around that you could use.

thanks for the reply, :)

I agree,as I have a laptop that I use now for netflix,etc,

but I thought it would be easier to use and cleaner looking to have a little box on my gear stand than my laptop on the floor, and I do have an old desktop but it does not have hdmi out and it's just too old to buy a new video card for it.

like you said, the streaming units are pretty inexpensive.

do you need access to your media files on the PC?

If not why not get a Roku HD/S for $99

no,not really,I looked at that one too and liked it as well.

my question is what units do 5.1 on netflix movies ?

if the specs say it does "Dolby Digital Audio and DTS ",does that mean 5.1 ?

I have a thread going on the same subject. It looks like that Iomega lacks flac support which would be a deal killer for me. I really like the Western Digital TV Live. The "plus" version adds Netflix. Both play DVD and BD rips in multiple formats in 1080P. If you don't need flac support how about one of the networked Blu-Ray players? But as far as I know so far only the PS3 does netflix in HD and with 5.1 sound.

so I picked up a Roku XD today from BB for $71,I really just wanted the pandora and the VERY occasional NF movie(I prefer BRD),but it seems perfect for my "weekend while doing things around the house music".

I have a digital to HDMI cable hooked up to my 32" Samsung for netflicks and the audio is optical toslink to my Yamaha 5.1 HT receiver. Simple.

well I decided after using the Roku for a week that I don't like it,the no on/off switch is an issue,

and it just doesn't work the way I want it to,so I returned it,

then it hit me,

my iPhone with a $3 adapter and the wall charger and my cisco wireless router does Pandora just fine.

I don't really use netflix for streaming,I prefer a BR disc.

so this works great ! for cheap !

I've pumped out some movies to my system via my HTC EVO's hdmi. It's kinda neat.
