You did something wrong or missed a deduction most likely. If you got the funds to put into an IRA or something you can still contribute and avoid paying a good portion of that if it turns out you must pay. Seriously scrounge up the cash for the IRA don't pay the government if you don't have too.

Gather up all, and I do mean all, your papers and tcall HR Block for a free second look appointment. If they come up with the same results you did, you're boned. Go home and file them yourself.

But, if they do find a way to lessen your tax burden, don't expect them to tell you what you did wrong. They will, however, file them for you for a fee. That's their business.

Tax rates didn't change from 2009 to 2010 so something is wrong. If you didn't enter any personal information (using the free online version perhaps?) it may have made an assumption about your filing status which could lead to an incorrect standard deduction.

well, thats good, i guess. last year we had an accountant do them.
we had no deductions to claim = what we had didn't add up to more than the standard, and i even cheated a little. so i figured it was pretty "cut -n-dried", and i could do them myself this year. but book work is not my thing.

no, i skipped the personal stuff. but all the other questions seemed basic enough

The Federal withholding tables changed.
IOW they didn't take out as much up front, so that may be why you're paying now.
I think Mark's suggestion sounds like a good one.
There are so many variables; you can most likely bring them to three different preparers and get as many different results.

I have a write a $4k check to the Feds this year, and I'm not self-employed. That's when you get really screwed. My CPA said he had to cut a $25k check this year. No thanks.

I would gather all the personal stuff you can, remember if you made any donations, Large sales tax purchases. mortgage int, property taxes, and add them up. Hopefully, they will add up enought to go over the STD deduction. If not, the withholding table change may have caused it.

Sorry to hear. My mom has to cut a check for $10k, if that makes you feel any better. That's after all the tax she had witheld.
