Ideas for SAF Compliant 5.1 Setup

Hey guys,

Just installed my new HT setup. A 40" XBR2 hung over the fireplace and a Denon 4306 providing video switching (cable, DVD changer, DVD Recorder, PS2, Media Center PC) and audio.

My dilemma is getting the center channel speaker to meet the spouse approval factor (SAF). Currently I have an old JBL Northridge 5.1 system with a pretty huge center sitting on the mantel.

I was thinking I would go with in-walls, but found I have a stud right smack dab in the middle of the wall where the center needs to go.

So I am looking for a really small speaker I can put on the mantel as a center channel. If I find the right center then I plan to fill in the rest of the system with voice matched speakers from the same line.

A couple of options I have been looking at:

A Mirage setup. Use a Nanosat Prestige as the center, and a pair of Omnisat FS for the right and left to fill in the midrange/bass. Another pair of Prestige's for the surrounds.

A Monitor Audio setup. R180 as the center (this guy's size would be pushing the limits of the SAF) and a pair of R270s for right and left. R90s for the surrounds.

First any comments on the Mirage Nanosat Prestige, I haven't found any at any local dealers so I haven't heard them yet. They say they perform better than the Nanosat's which I found to be pretty weak sounding.

Any comment on the Monitor Audio speakers, they seemed to sound okay for a reasonable priced speaker.

I would like to stay around $1500 for the L,C,R and 2 surrounds.

Thanks in advance for any input.

I would choose the MA over the Mirage's based upon looks and performace. The mirages just didnt do it for me. I would also look at the 225 as the center over the 180.

There are also structual options to get around the stud. In fact, if it is not a load bearing wall you may be able to just cut it out (I hold no responsibility for the outcome - check with an engineer). Otherwise, you could box it (much like a small window would be boxed into a wall) and place the speaker in the resulting hole.

Good luck.
