So... uh... I am a member to like... maybe forty forums, none of which I regularly visit (I usually only get an account to ask one question, then I am gone)... But reading around, and getting a few responses from all you - I like the atmosphere here.

Thusly, I am posting something COMPLETELY un-related to audio or video (Except for the fact that I al _listening_ to Dark Side of the Moon on a pair of dingy Logitech speakers)... an idea that I just had.

According to WikiPedia, "The Moon" is internatial territory. Anything goes.

WikiPedia also claims that Apollo 11 left a small silicone disc on the surface of the moon, containing various bits of data.

From my understanding, I can get myself to the moon, pick up this disc, and sell the thing on eBay?

That is truly beautiful. And if anyone has any ideas on how I can get to the moon, you get half the profit.

I'd be surprised if something is up for grabs just because it's in international territory. To me, it would be like saying that you could just walk down a public street and take anyone's car that you wanted - after all, they are on public property.

The United Nations is international territory. Just walk in there and take what you want for eBay. It's a lot easier than going to the Moon.

I think I can help get you to the moon. It may hurt a little but if you hang in there, I think it will work.

I’m thinking NASA would claim rights to their property, and sue you for the profits.

Res6,

You will need to sell this disc for at least $200M to break even. Heres why/ how...

It costs about $20M to buy a short ride to outer space. Assuming it costs only 10 times as much to get to the moon and back. (someone with more time on their hands can probably look up how much the actual moon landing cost and give us more concrete numbers. For your effort, a chicklet from me is assured)

I have to commend you for thinking outside the box. Flights of fancy aside, if you use this creativity in a slightly more grounded (pun intended) approach, you might hit upon an idea considerably more entrepreneurial.

I would be happy to launch you to the moon. But I'm afraid I don't want to go to jail.

----I love the wikipedia.....
"Answering President Kennedy's challenge and landing men on the moon by the end of 1969 required the most sudden burst of technological creativity, and the largest commitment of resources ($25 billion), ever made by any nation in peacetime."

"In March 1966, NASA told Congress the "run-out cost" of the Apollo program to put men on the moon would be an estimated $22.718 Billion for the 13-year program which eventually accomplished six successful missions between July 1969 and December 1972.

According to Steve Garber, the NASA History website curator, the final cost of project Apollo was between $20 and $25.4 billion in 1969 dollars (or approximately $135 billion in 2005 dollars).

The costs associated with the Apollo spacecraft and Saturn rockets amounted to about $83 billion [Apollo spacecraft: $28 billion (Command/Service Module: $17 billion; Lunar Module: $11-billion), Saturn I, Saturn IB, Saturn V launch vehicles: about $46 billion] in 2005 dollars."

So good luck making any profit on your moon mission......:D

Well, I figure since the moon is "International Territory", it would be like International Waters --- if you find a ship/boat/island that is completely uninhabited, then it's yours for the taking (salvage hunters, etc.)

I think NASA would be more concerned with the HOW I got to the moon rather than the silicone disc, however.

The slingshot idea, however... genius. I could build that for less than a million, I would guess.

And then, yes, sell the chip for --- one million dollars!!!

(Uh, Dr. Evil - - - )

20 million, yes, that's right.
