I think I fixed my subs...?.?.? Maybe

I’ve been having the hardest time integrating my sub into a 2.1 system. Moved the SINGLE sub around multiple times and turned every setting down continually and nothing helped. (Running the sub off of room two outputs.) finally set phase 180° out and I’ve been turning gain and crossover back up waiting for the inevitable boom. I thought phase was just for multiple subs, am I wrong? I’ve heard the saying trust your ears, well my ears say the phase adjustment solved many of my problems but I didn’t think that’s how it works, please educate me.

That is not correct, someone gave you bad information. Depending on the crossover slopes, distances between sub and mains, and other possible issues, the phase switch can help compensate. The problems, audibly-speaking, are usually an octave or so above and/or below the crossover frequency. If changing the switch position got you an audible improvement, then go with it.

I’m going to say that you probably are ready for 12in ported subs and in duals so you won’t have such a hard time tuning. Sorry if this is not the information you want to hear. I’m just trying to get you to the finish line.

Good luck! :)
