I think I did something wrong...

Hey folks,
I finally bought myself an SACD the other day just to see what they sound like. I have a Pioneer 588a that can play SACD's, and I have hooked up the analog rca out's to the 7.1 channel inputs on my Marantz SR5600 Receiver. I set the DVD player to output the multichannel part of the SACD and to output as 5.1. I set the receiver to pick up from the 7.1 channel inputs. I started it playing, and all I got was some very soft sounds through my center channel speaker. Granted I do not yet have a sub or surrounds yet, just the front L/R and Center, but I would have expected to at least hear something from the L/R speakers too. I am pretty sure that I wired it up correctly, at least I hope so. I can play it as a CD through the digital out to the receiver and it sounds great, but I was trying to make sure that I had set things up right. Any Ideas?

When using the multichannel analog connections, you have to set the speaker levels in the player's setup. Not sure about the 5600, but you may also have the ability to adjust those the levels of the 7.1 channel inputs (my 8300 does).

The next question is, which SACD specifically? Not all SACDs are multichannel.

J,
You are right, not all SACD's are multichannel. This one is however:

http://www.telarc.com/gscripts/title.asp?gsku=0575&mscssid=PD97K25BWRN39M93HRU4NC5JKJVUFL03

It is Telarc's Carmina Burana. I do have the ability to adjust the db level of the inputs, I have not messed with it yet, since I was not sure what to do.

By the way, even using it as a CD, without a sub, the drum beats during O Fortuna shake the house on my little Paradigm Titans. It's so fun, my 1 year old son loves it! He gets such a big grin on his face when I put in some fun music like that.

I have that on CD, not sure if on Telarc. Boy, when the solo male singer is on, the center is super; then, the music kicks in all around, wow.

Oops, I'm an idiot!

Folks,
Well, I am so embarrassed. I figured out what the problem was. I must not have been paying very good attention when I first plugged the cables in, the FL/FR going to the stereo was somehow plugged into the SBL/SBR inputs. I don't have those speakers yet, so of course I wasn't hearing anything! I guess it helps to plug the cables into the right spots. I put them in, and suddenly it all sounded right! The sound is very clean and clear. I love the O Fortuna song the best, but there are several good soloists that just sound incredible. I like the liner notes on this one, it has all the words in Latin, and in English for each of the songs. The poetry is very interesting. Now, I am on to try a DVD-Audio and a DTS music disc. Just one other question, I am supposing that DVD-Audio's also go through the analog outs? Do they ever go through the digital outs? Either way, I am sure it will be fun to listen to.

Yes, DVDA will go out the analog but, since they are discrete channels, the L and R will have different sound that the stereo digital out that you can also do and should do. The digital stereo will have the center blended in properly whereas the analog would not as the analog would be used with all the channels having speakers.

OK, DVDA will send the signal through the analog cable just like the SACD. So, the three front speakers will have the appropriate signals and sound. Not sure what that DVDA disc has on its digital out. It is not the same hi res as on the analog. It could be DD or DTS, or just stereo in digital form that your processor should decode in pro logic form to the 3 front speakers.
