I really need some help with cleaning a projector lens

How do you do it, there is a smudge on the lens and i am scared to wipe it
any suggestions and/or experiences

Can you tell if it is on the outside surface, inside surface, or withing the lens itself?
The outside can be wiped with soft cloth, or tissue. Inside is out of question. Back surface needs to get into it, probably in the book for lamp replacement part, maybe.

its a smudge on the outside, but wont i scratch it?

If you're really worried, you can stop by a camera store and pick up a lens cleaning cloth.
