I have the Onkyo 601 Receiver and Im looking for some good 5.1 or 6.1 speakers to go along with it. My budget is $200 for speakers. What do you think will be the best setup?

Thank you.

Save up. I do not mean any disrespect, but you can't buy one quality speaker for $200. If your budget is small, the best decision would be to buy your mains first. They mean the most. Then, one at a time if you have to, buy the rest of the speakers.

I have to agree with Zumbo...you can't buy a "good" 5.1 or 6.1 setup for $200. Maybe a "good" center channel speaker or a mediocre subwoofer, but not a whole setup. Save up a couple hundred more and get some decent front speakers that you really, really like and then slowly build a "good" 5.1 or 6.1 system around them. Or get a decent pair of bookshelf speakers (Paradigm Atoms or Titans come to mind) and use them as front channel speakers for now. You could always move them to the surround position once you save up some coin for the rest of the setup.

Jason, it all depends what dbag69 is looking for and his financial situation, unfortunately not everybody can afford certain good things in life.

Ubviously dbag69 knows that $ 200 will not buy him the best speakers on the market, but I think he is looking to buy half way decent speakers and the Onkyo I recommended are pretty decent sounding speakers for the money.

Look for used speakers.

I have to agree with Mr. T. If you are on a budget you are on a budget. I was over at my neighbors house last weekend and he has the same speakers connected to the 601. We had Toy Story on in the background while our kids were watching and playing. It sounded better than I expected and after looking at the link I'm surprised they only cost $199. Dbag69, that setup will wet your appetite and keep you going until you can afford some better quality speakers :)

dbbag,
I'm still using the Onkyo 510 system for my surrounds and center channel. Some day soon I'll upgrade, but for now they are more than adaquate for movies. They are a bit murky sounding for 2 channel music however.
I'd suggest you go with the Onkyos for now and maybe some day look into replacing the front speakers. Possibly with Athenas?
